As the result of this PAOB problem, the 1979 will be rerun. The rest period (1980Jan01 through 1993Apr02) will remain the same as they are until future Reanalysis effort. See also FAQ list for details. As of 1996Sep10, the PAOBS corrected 1979 reanalysis products are the current release of 1979 reanalysis data.

Upper atmospheric winds at upper isobaric levels have been interpolated incorrectly near polar regions between 1982-1993. NCEP is currently working on this problem. We have received corrected data between 1982 and 1988. The corrected data will be available for access when they are ready. For the currect status, check Project Status at NCAR
The reanalysis model runs start from 1985. A revisit of 1985 to alleviate the spin-up effects has been run and the results of this rerun become the official release of 1985 reanalysis products.
NCEP has discovered that the ssmi wind speeds assimilated for the period July 1987 - Dec 1991 were computed without a transformation from "antenna" temperature to "brightness" temperature. A evaluation estimated that the error created 10m wind speeds that are 2m/sec too fast. Moreover, further investigation has revealed occasional overwriting of a partial orbit from tomorrow on today's 00Z collection.
