  Data from Special Projects

This page contains links to several special projects for which we maintain at least some of the data.

    • Reanalyses
Reanalysis projects are efforts to reanalyze historical data using state-of-the-art models. The data resulting from reanalyses are especially useful for climate change studies, as it is difficult to separate changes due to model improvements from real climate changes when the model has evolved over time. We have data from both the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis and the ECMWF Reanalysis.

    • THORPEX Interactive Grand Global Ensemble (TIGGE)
The THORPEX Interactive Grand Global Ensemble is a key component of THORPEX: a world weather research programme to accelerate the improvements in the accuracy of 1-day to 2 week high-impact weaher forecasts for the benefit of humanity.

    • International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS)
The International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set has been created by combining, editing, and summarizing global in-situ marine data from many different sources. Merchant ship observations back to 1784 have been supplemented in more recent years with automated measurements, such as from drifting and moored buoys.

    • GEWEX Continental-Scale International Project (GCIP)
GCIP is a project to determine the variability of the Earth's hydrological cycle and energy exchange budget over a continental-scale, to develop and validate techniques for coupling atmospheric and surface hydrological processes in climate models, and to provide a basis for translating the effects of future climate change to impacts on regional water resources. We are an archive site for the mesoscale model output products from this project.

    • Climate Database Modernization Program (CDMP)
The Climate Database Modernization Program is a partnership between NCDC and private industry to image and key paper and microfilm records and to make them available to members of the climate and environmental research community. We have some CDMP data in our archive and have plans to add more in the future.

    • TOGA COARE
All products created in support of the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere Coupled Ocean Atmosphere Response Experiement are archived here at the Data Support Section.

    • U.S. Country Studies Program
The U.S. Country Studies Program is a program designed to help countries examine their greenhouse gas emissions and develop policies for mitigating these emissions, and to help them deal with and adapt to climate change. We maintain data in support of this program, which includes results from various climate model runs for specific increases in CO2 concentrations.

    • Climate Model Products for Assessment Studies
We maintain an archive of climate model output products for use in assessment and impact studies of global climate change. These products include the outputs from recent climate model runs at various centers, as well as some statistical products derived from these runs.

    • Global Emissions Impact Activity (GEIA)
The purpose of the Global Emissions Impact Activity project is to make global emissions, such as SO2, NOx, and methane available on a one-degree grid for the entire world. GEIA is an activity of the International Global Atmospheric Chemistry Core Project of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program.

    • Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
The International Panel on Climate Change is a program established to assess the information available for understanding global climage change and its impacts and how to mitigate and adapt to it. We maintain some data in support of the program, including climate model output from runs targeted at specific amounts of global warming.

    • Kuwait Oil Fires
We have assembled data for the region around Kuwait for the purpose of studying the Kuwait oil fires.

    • Atmospheric Indices
We maintain data for various atmospheric indices, much of which was obtained from the Climate Prediction Center of NWS/NOAA. More indices can be obtained from the CPC.
