Previous newsletters are filed by year. 03 August 2001 CONTENTS: o New subroutines needed for ds111.1 for 2000 data o Advanced Operational Analysis datasets (ds111.0, .1, .3) updated through December 2000 o Basic Consolidated dataset (ds111.2) updated thru June, 2001, continues to be updated monthly o NCAR CRAYS will be taken out of service ============================================================================ New Subroutines Needed for DS111.1 for 2000 Data ECMWF has changed some of the internal codes in the surface data (ds111.1) starting with the June 27, 2000 data. The old subroutines (gribsubs.f, subs_sun.f, subs_cray.f,subs_vax.f) will not decode the data after June 26,2000. ECMWF has provided new subroutines which decode all the older data and the new data. Unfortunately, these subroutines are not available as stand-alone routines you can just plug into your programs. When you download the new routines, you have to run make files which then create a software library which has to be loaded when you compile your program. The calling sequences are the same, so you do not have to change any calls in your main program. However, there is another problem. In the main program, the status flag returned by some of the subroutines has changed and a small change needs to made to any programs provided by DSS. You can download the new subroutines and get more info on the problems from http://dss.ucar.edu/datasets/ds111.1/software. The above problems seem to only affect the ds111.1 data for now, but it is possible and likely similar changes will be made to the other datasets in the future. ============================================================================ Advanced Operational Analysis datasets (ds111.0, .1, .3) updated through December 2000 The Advanced Operational Analysis datasets (ds111.0, .1, .3) have been updated with the 2000 data. You can obtain the listing of the volume serial numbers containing the data from the file datasets/ds111.x/MSS-file-list (where x is 0, 1, 3, or 6 depending on the particular dataset), via anonymous FTP to ncardata.ucar.edu. Or, use a WWW browser and open the URL http://dss.ucar.edu/datasets/ds111.x as above. A few changes have been made to the archive by ECMWF.
