This is ECMWF-users' newsletter #33. To get copies of previous newsletters, use anonymous FTP to ncardata.ucar.edu [128.117.8.111] and change directory to docs/ecmwf-users-news. Or, use a WWW browser and open ftp://ncardata.ucar.edu/docs/ecmwf-users-news. Previous newsletters are filed by year. 29 December 1997 CONTENTS: o Evaporation fields replaced in ERA supplementary fields (ds115.2) o High resolution ERA surface data available as ds115.3 o High resolution ERA supplementary fields available as ds115.5 o Status of other ECMWF data updates o New location for newsletter archive ============================================================================ Evaporation fields replaced in ERA supplementary fields (ds115.2) ECMWF has replaced the reanalyzed supplementary fields with a new version with corrected evaporation (parameter 182). (The problem with the evaporation fields was described in ECMWF-users' newsletter #31, which is at ftp://ncardata.ucar.edu/docs/ecmwf-users-news/1997/mail31_2Sep1997) Although only the evaporation values have changed, ECMWF supplied a new copy of the entire dataset. Because the files were organized slightly differently -- each file contains one full year of data, where in the original dataset each file contained a half year -- you must get a new copy of the MASTER file if you wish to retrieve files in this dataset from the MSS. There may be some small differences between the original dataset and this update in the other fields, however these are not significant and most likely due to rounding, as ECMWF used a different compiler and operating system when they regenerated the data they sent us. You can obtain the listing of the volume serial numbers containing the data from the file datasets/ds115.2/MASTER via anonymous FTP to ncardata.ucar.edu. Or, use a WWW browser and open the URL http://www.ucar.edu/dss/datasets/ds115.2.html. This file is also on the Mass Store under the name /DSS/D/DS1152. If you wish to get only the new evaporation fields, I've extracted them into the following temporary files. Each is about 120 MB. /ILANA/E12Z18A 12Z step 18-12 /ILANA/E12Z24A 12Z step 24-18 /ILANA/E00Z18A 00Z step 18-12 /ILANA/E00Z24A 00Z step 24-18 I have sent tapes containing these fields to those data users who received the original version dataset on tape. ============================================================================ High resolution ERA surface data available as ds115.3 The ECMWF reanalysis advanced operational initialized surface analyses have begun to arrive at NCAR. This dataset is similar to ds115.0 except that it is on an N80 Gaussian grid (it is essentially the reanalysed version of ds111.1). The dataset reference number is ds115.3. Currently, the first five years (1979-1983) are on the MSS; the second five years have arrived at NCAR but have not yet been imported, and the final five years of the period have been sent from ECMWF but have not yet arrived. The entire period of record should be available by early January, so I will not send out bulletins as this dataset is updated; instead, please check the MASTER file which will reflect the most up-to-date state of this dataset. The period 1981MAR09-1981DEC03 is missing because the tape sent by ECMWF was unreadable. ECMWF has sent a replacement tape, but I have not yet extracted the data; please check the MASTER file which will indicate when the replacement files have been added to the dataset. You can obtain the listing of the volume serial numbers containing the data from the file datasets/ds115.3/MASTER via anonymous FTP to ncardata.ucar.edu. Or, use a WWW browser and open the URL http://www.ucar.edu/dss/datasets/ds115.3.html. This file is also on the Mass Store under the name /DSS/D/DS1153. You should be able to use the existing ECMWF grib reading code on this dataset. The record length is 17968 bytes (2246 Cray words). ============================================================================ High resolution ERA supplementary fields available as ds115.5 The ECMWF reanalysis advanced operational initialized surface analyses have begun to arrive at NCAR. This dataset is similar to ds115.2 except that it is on an N80 Gaussian grid (it is essentially the reanalysed version of ds111.3). The dataset reference number is ds115.5. You can obtain the listing of the volume serial numbers containing the data from the file datasets/ds115.5/MASTER via anonymous FTP to ncardata.ucar.edu. Or, use a WWW browser and open the URL http://www.ucar.edu/dss/datasets/ds115.5.html. This file is also on the Mass Store under the name /DSS/D/DS1155. ============================================================================ Status of other ECMWF data updates We will be ordering the advanced upper-air reanalyses soon. This is the T106 data and will be in spectral representation, like ds111.0. This is a very high volume dataset and will likely take several shipments over a period of time. I will notify this list when this data becomes available here. The monthly means from ECMWF are still not available. NCAR users who wish to use the unofficial monthly means that Todd Ringler of CSU has compiled can contact me for information. The operational data (ECMWF/TOGA archive) will be probably be updated through December 1997 in late January for the low-resolution ds111.2, and in March or April for the high resolution datasets. ============================================================================ New location for newsletter archive I have moved the newsletter archive out of the /datasets/ds111.2/ directory and into its own home in the docs area of our ftp site. The new location is on ncardata.ucar.edu in the /docs/ecmwf-users-news/ directory; individual newsletters are sorted into directories for each year. ============================================================================ If you would like to be added to or taken off this mailing list, please contact me. If you are interested in ordering any ECMWF data, or any other data from NCAR's archives, please contact me. I can be reached at ilana@ncar.ucar.edu or by phone at (303)497-1214.
