This is the twenty-fourth ECMWF-users' newsletter. To get copies of previous newsletters, use anonymous FTP to ncardata.ucar.edu [128.117.8.111] and change directory to datasets/ds111.2/news. Or, use a WWW browser and open http://www.ucar.edu/dss/datasets/ds111.2.html and select "news". 5 August 1996 CONTENTS: o Basic Consolidated Dataset (ds111.2) updated through June 1996 o Change in data format beginning April 1996; new software required o Year-month means dataset (ds111.5) updated through June 1996 ============================================================================ Basic Consolidated Dataset (ds111.2) update The Basic Consolidated Dataset (ds111.2) has been updated with the April - June 1996 data. The new volumes are: Y31801 1996APR Y31802 1996MAY Y31803 1996JUN You can obtain the listing of all volume serial numbers in this dataset from the file datasets/ds111.2/MASTER, via anonymous FTP to ncardata.ucar.edu. Or, use a WWW browser and open http://www.ucar.edu/dss/datasets/ds111.2.html This file is also on the Mass Store under the name /DSS/D/DS1112. ============================================================================ Change in data format A few more slight changes to the data format (in particular, new extended PDS values and new legal values for other header items) have necessitated another update to the software. If you are using the data on the NCAR Crays, the MSS files have been updated. If you are using the data on your own computer, please retrieve the new subroutines from the ftp machine ncardata.ucar.edu in the /datasets/ds111.2/software directory. You will need a new copy of gribsubs.f as well as a new copy of the appropriate machine-specific code (either subs_cray.f, subs_sun.f, or subs_vax.f). The changes described in the previous bulletin still hold: 1) Beginning with the March 1996 data, the record length is increased from 10560 to 10680 bytes. 2) You must increase the length of several arrays in your main program. If you call GRIBEX with this calling sequence: call gribex (ksec0, ksec1, ksec2, psec2, ksec3, psec3, & ksec4, f, jpflen, igrib, jpglen, idum, hoper, ierr) then the following arrays must be redimensioned: ksec1(60) [increased from 25] ksec2(384) [increased from 23] psec2(96) [increased from 10] ============================================================================ Year-month means dataset (ds111.5) update Monthly mean values have been computed for the first half of 1996 and added to the ds111.5 dataset. The 0Z means are in /DSS/Y31804 and the 12Z means are in /DSS/Y31805. You can obtain the complete listing of the volume serial numbers containing the data via anonymous FTP to ncardata.ucar.edu in the file datasets/ds111.5/MASTER, or use WWW and open http://www.ucar.edu/dss/datasets/ds111.5.html This file is also on the Mass Store under the name /DSS/D/DS1115. The new files are written in the new ECMWF format, i.e. the record length is 10680 bytes. This is because the decoding software is also used to encode GRIB data. ============================================================================ If you would like to be taken off this mailing list, please contact me.
