This is the thirteenth ECMWF-users' newsletter. To get copies of previous newsletters, use anonymous FTP to ncardata.ucar.edu [128.117.8.111] and change directory to datasets/ds111.2/news. Or, use a WWW client such as Mosaic and open http://www.ucar.edu, then select the NCAR Research Data Archives. This will get you into the Data Support Section ftp area with a nicer interface. You can then get into the ECMWF information via the information on ds111.2 (under the "frequently used datasets" or the menu of all datasets). 31 August 1994 CONTENTS: o Basic Consolidated dataset (ds111.2) updated through March 1994 o Advanced Operational Analysis datasets (ds111.0, .1, .3) updated through June 1994 o Changes since the 1993 Technical Attachment ============================================================================ Basic Consolidated dataset (ds111.2) update The Basic Consolidated dataset (ds111.2) has been updated with the January - March 1994 data. You can get the full list of VSNs from the MASTER file in the /datasets/ds111.2 directory in the ftp area on ncardata.ucar.edu. ============================================================================ Advanced Operational Analysis (ds111.0, .1, .3) update The Advanced Operational Analysis datasets (ds111.0, .1, .3) have been updated with the January - June 1994 data. You can get the full list of VSNs from the MASTER files from the ftp area on ncardata.ucar.edu. ============================================================================ Changes since the 1993 Technical Attachment A new version of the Technical Attachment to the Description of the ECMWF/WCRP Level III-A Global Atmospheric Data Archive was received from ECMWF. The following changes to the model since the previous version of this document were noted: 1 Feb 1993: Changes to the horizontal diffusion and the cloud radiation scheme. Inclusion of shortwave optical properties for ice and mixed phase clouds, and revision to the clear-ski absorption coefficients. 4 Aug 1993: Changes in model physics to improve representation of surface and planetary boundary layer processes. Impact of these changes: overall synoptic improvement of predicted flow, particularly over Europe in the summer; significant reduction of the warm bias in continental boundary layer during daytime in summer; improvement of the humidity in the boundary layer, with more realistic diurnal cycle. [For more detail on this change, email me with your mailing address and I'll send you a copy of ECMWF's Attachment 3 which describes the changes to the model.] 5 October 1993: Change to the boundary layer parameterization; profiles of 2m T revised to reduce coupling between skin T and lowest model levels T. 11 October 1993: Pre-processing modified to correct radiosonde observations for systematic biases prior to their use. Correction is applied to stations which present significant bias in geopotential height due to radiative effects. For a complete list of changes to the model since inception on 1 January 1985, email me with your mailing address.
