Each of these programs was tested on an SGI (IRIX 5.3) and on a SUN (SunOS 5.6). You need to have the HDF 4 libraries installed on your system. To run the above Makefiles, use the following command:
make -f

Please note that before the IDL programs will work correctly, the directory on your local system which contains the QuikSCAT data must be input into the program. (Search on "data_dir" to find this line quickly.)
