                             The Greenwich Mean Time data date.
                             YYMMDD = Year, Month, and Day.

  2. WMO-STATION-ID          Characters 8-12         I5
                             The World Meteorological Organization (WMO)
                             Station Identification.  A WMO 5-digit Station
                             Identification.  99999 = a 3 or 4 letter AIRWAYS-
                             CALLSIGN is present in characters 14-17.

                             Blank only.

  3. AIRWAYS-CALLSIGN        Characters 14-17        A4
                             A 3 or 4 character AIRWAYS-CALLSIGN, or blanks.
                             Two combinations of WMO identifier and callsign
                             are possible:

                                 A.  WMO ID is present in characters 8-12,
                                     so blanks will appear in AIRWAYS-CALLSIGN.
                                 B.  A 99999 in WMO-STATION-ID indicates a
                                     3 or 4 digit airways callsign will be
                                     present.

  4. LATITUDE-CODE           Characters 18-23        I6
                             The latitude north or south of a specified station.
                             Latitude is the angular distance north or south
                             from the earth's equator, measured through
                             90 degrees.  Negative values indicate southern
                             latitudes.  range bb0000 to b-9000.

  5. LONGITUDE-CODE          Characters 24-29        I6
                             The longitudinal position of a specified station.
                             Longitude is the arc or portion of the earth's
                             equator intersected between the meridian of a given
                             place and the prime meridian (as from Greenwich,
                             England).  Range b00000 to b36000 degrees west
                             from Greenwich expressed to nearest .01 degrees
                             of longitude.

  6. ELEVATION               Characters 30-34        I5
                             The station elevation relative to mean sea level
                             expressed in whole meters.

  7. MAX-TEMPERATURE         Characters 35-39        I5
                             The maximum temperature which occurred during the
                             past 24 hours expressed in degrees Celsius to
                             nearest .1 degree.

                             bb999 = may be estimated from reported synoptic
                                     air temperature if sufficient data exist.
                             b9999 = missing temperature.

  8. MAX-TEMP-FLAG           Characters 40-41        I2
                             A 2-digit maximum temperature flag.

                             First digit
                                 0 = valid extreme temperature report.
                                 1 = invalid extreme temperature report.
                                 2 = missing extreme temperature report, value is
                                     estimated.
                                 3 = nonreporting time, value replaced by estimate
                                     since 00 zulu.

                             Second digit
                               0-8 = number of missing air temperatures in
                                     validation.
                                 9 = extreme temperature is missing.

  9. MIN-TEMPERATURE         Characters 42-46        I5
                             The minimum temperature which occurred during the
                             past 24 hours expressed in degrees Celsius to
                             nearest .1 degree.

                             bb999 = may be estimated from reported synoptic
                                     air temperature if sufficient data exist.
                             b9999 = missing temperature.

 10. MIN-TEMP-FLAG           Characters 47-48        I2
                             A 2-digit minimum temperature flag.  Read description
                             of maximum temperature flags in characters 40-41.
                             The same description applies to MIN-TEMP-FLAG.

 11. TOTAL-DAILY-PRECIP      Characters 49-53        I5
                             The total precipitation reported during the 24-hour
                             period.  This amount may include precipitation
                             which fell during the previous 24-hour period but
                             was not included in the previous day's summary
                             record.  Expressed in millimeters to nearest .1
                             of an mm.

 12. 24-HR-PRECIP-FLAG       Characters 54-55        I2
                             A 2 digit 24-hour precipitation flag.

                             First digit
                                0 = no precipitation event in previous 24 hours.
                                1 = precipitation event occurred in previous
                                    24 hours.
                                9 = precipitation missing.

                             Second digit (number of 3-hour periods not covered
                                           in previous 24 hours)
                              8-9 = no estimate of amount possible.


 13. PRECIP-TRACE-FLAG       Character 56            A1
                             A precipitation trace flag.

                                M = precipitation amount missing.
                                T = trace of precipitation in past 24 hours,
                                    set to T when digit 1 of 24-hour precipi-
                                    tation flag is '1' and the 24-hour
                                    precipitation amount equals zero.
                                b = neither of the above.

 14. PRESENT/PAST-WEA-FLAGS  Characters 57-64        8A1
                             The present and/or past weather flags.  There are
     (see tables below;      eight 1-character flags indicating the general
      note the change        form of present weather for each of the 8 synoptic
      in present weather     reporting times, or the past weather if present
      character flags        weather is not available.  Position of the flag
      beginning in 1982)     from left to right indicates the time of observa-
                             tions; i.e., 00Z = position 1, 03Z = position 2,
                             etc.  A '1' indicates neither present nor past
                             weather was reported.  Present weather character
                             flags are derived from NMC Office Note 124, Code
                             Table 4, and past weather flags from Office Note
                             124, Code Table 5.

 15. NUMBER-OF-OBS-RCVD      Characters 65-66        I2
                             The total number of synoptic observations received.

 16. NMBR-OBS-REPORTING      Characters 67-68        I2
     PRESENT/PAST-WEA        The total number of synoptic observations reporting
                             the occurrence of present and/or past weather.

     DURING-24HR             The total precipitation which fell and was reported

                             The total precipitation which was estimated and
                             reported during any periods when reported amounts
                             were not available.  Expressed in millimeters
                             to nearest .1 of a millimeter.

 19. NMBR-6HR-PERIODS-       Characters 81-82        I2
     DURING-24HR             The number of 6-hour periods for which reported
                             amounts were not available and were estimated.
