Tape Data Family Thirteen (TD13) are global surface observations one or more
hours per day from 1901 to 1973. TD13 originated when multiple sets of computer
cards (decks) were translated to 7-Track computer tapes in External Binary Coded
Decimal as described in the "AWS Electronic Data Processing Reference Manual
Data Family 13 Synoptic Observations". However, it was delivered to the Data
Support Section at NCAR on 9-Track tapes in EBCDIC and enhanced. Two versions
are described here: Fixed-blocked (fblk) originals and Reanalysis 2 (ras2).
fblk refers to the original tapes where multiple 165 character records are
combined; the 165 character length has been verified despite contrary remarks in
td13man1. Records have two sections, the "standard tape form" with consistently
available parameters and "supplemental fields" which are different for each
deck.
ras2 refers to the the current version which happens to use the second version
of a common record header. ras2 also contains the fblk characters in ASCII and
an integer interpretation of standard tape form fields plus pressure hundreds
digit and/or station pressure from supplemental fields.
