Roy Jenne 21 Apr 1995 Information about NMC Analysis and Forecast Models 1. Model documentation on Mosaic, at NMC http://sgi62,wwb.noaa.gov:8000 . from menu, select global modeling branch . then select forecast model information (about 5 pages with references) . there is also information about the SSI analysis methods 2. Texts on the Reanalysis Project a. Kalnay, E., ..., R. Jenne (many authors), 1995: "The NMC/NCAR Reanalysis Project." Submitted to Bul AMS about Apr 1995. b. Kalnay, E. and R. Jenne, 1991: "Summary of the NMC/NCAR Reanalysis Workshop of Apr 1991." Bul American Meteorology Society, Vol 72, 1897-1904 (Dec 1991 issue). 3. Other Texts a. _______, about 1992: "Research Highlights of the NMC Development Division, 1989-91." This is an NMC report. b. Trenberth, K. and J. Olson, 1988: "Evaluation of NMC Global Analyses: 1979-87." NCAR/TN-299-STR, 82 pp. 4. Model changes at NMC A few of the changes at NMC are shown below. Many improvements have been made. Reanalysis will do a better job with the older data. NCAR has information about the data, the model changes, etc. a. 22 Sep 1978: Started the 9-level global grid point model (tropical winds were bad before this). b. May 1980 - R24, L12 started May 1980; R30 started Aug 1982; Mar 1991 R40, L18 started May 1986; T80, L18 started Aug 1987; T126, L18 started 6 Mar 1991. c. 25 Jun 1991: T126, L18 with new SSI analysis methods started. This was a major change. d. 4 Feb 1992: Full clouds and radiation are done each 3 hours, not just each 12 hours as before. Reanalysis: The production phase of reanalysis started in Jun 1994, using T62 with 28 levels. By Dec 1995 about 13 years will be done.
