ECMWF's N80 REDUCED GAUSSIAN GRID
This table describes ECMWF's N80 Reduced Gaussian Grid which is used for
all of the ERA40 model resolution surface,single level and vertical integral data
as well as other products.
The reduced gaussian grid is symmetric about the equator and has 80 points aligned
along the Greenwich Meridian from equator to pole for a total of 160 latitude points.
There are 320 points along the latitude circles near the equator, but the number
of points along each latitude circle decreases toward the pole until there are only 18
points along latitude circles nearest to the poles.
Note that if you use ECMWF's EMOS software package to decode this data, you have
the option to leave the data in the origianl reduced gaussian grid or have the
program interpolate the data onto the regular 320x160 n80 gaussian grid. This
is controlled by the hoper variable.
The table below depicts the latitude, number of longitude points along that latitude circle and the
first 3 longitude points along each latitude circle. A text table
depicting all latitude and longitude points is available.
