GRIDDED ANALYSIS DATASETS > SELECTED SEA-LEVEL PRESSURE DATASETSGo to Dataset:

This list contains information about gridded sea-level pressure datasets in the DSS archive. The datasets presented here represent the better choices of sets from our archive. They are listed according to the length of the period of record and are not necessarily in order of most reliable data to least reliable data. Please be sure to read the Comments section for a dataset entry, if it exists. To go to a dataset in the list, click its ID number. For a complete list of DSS datasets containing gridded sea-level pressure data, click the link at the bottom of the list.

ID #Dataset Title/Description
ds010.0Daily (and Monthly) Northern Hemisphere Sea Level Pressure Grids

    Period of Record:1899-continuinga
Areal Coverage:Northern Hemisphere:
(15°N to 90°N)
Grid Resolution/Type:5°x5°/Latitude-Longitude
Frequency:Daily:
Prior to April 1955, grids are available once daily
From April 1955 on, grids are available twice daily at 12-hour intervals
Cost:Free
Comments:The grids in this dataset have been assembled from the analyses of various operational center models and meteorological projects to create a long time series of grids. Because of this, you may see some discontinuities in the data when the time series changes from one data source to another. The source of each grid is flagged in the grid's header. See the documentation section of the dataset for more information.
ds010.1Trenberth's Northern Hemisphere Monthly Sea-Level Pressure Grids

    Period of Record:1899-continuinga
Areal Coverage:Northern Hemisphere:
(15°N to 90°N)
Grid Resolution/Type:5°x5°/Latitude-Longitude
Frequency:Monthly:
One grid per month, with all available daily grids used to compute the monthly grid
Cost:Free
Comments:See the comments for ds010.0 (above)
ds195.0Daily Northern Hemisphere 47x51 Time Series Tropospheric Analyses

    Period of Record:1946-continuinga
Areal Coverage:Northern Hemisphere
Grid Resolution/Type:381km at 60°N latitude/Polar-Stereographic
Frequency:Daily:
Prior to April 1955, grids are available once daily
From April 1955 on, grids are available twice daily at 12-hour intervals
Cost:Free
ds195.1Daily Northern Hemisphere 72x19 Time Series Tropospheric Analyses

    Period of Record:1946-continuinga
Areal Coverage:Northern Hemisphere
Grid Resolution/Type:5°x5°/Latitude-Longitude
Frequency:Daily:
Prior to April 1955, grids are available once daily
From April 1955 on, grids are available twice daily at 12-hour intervals
Cost:Free
Comments:Generally, ds010.0 (see above) is a better choice, except that from 1993 on, data in the ds195.1 grids go all the way to the Equator.
ds090.0NCEP/NCAR Global Reanalysis Products
    Period of Record:1948-continuinga
Areal Coverage:Entire Globe
Grid Resolution/Type:2.5°x2.5°/Latitude-Longitude
Frequency:Four times daily at 6-hour intervals
Cost:There is a charge for this dataset. See the dataset web page for more information.
Comments:6-hourly monthly grids are also available free of charge from our website. See the dataset web page for more information.

The reanalysis grids are analyses from a single version of a single model for a long period of time. Therefore, biases due to model evolution are not present in these grids. If your period of study spans a large portion of the 1948-on period, this dataset is probably your best choice. If you are looking at only the very recent years, the other datasets are better choices because model evolution makes the most recent analyses the best available at the time.
ds082.1
and
ds083.1
NCEP Global Tropospheric Analyses, near surface subset
    Period of Record:1976 July-continuinga
Areal Coverage:Entire Globe
Grid Resolution/Type:2.5°x2.5°/Latitude-Longitude
Frequency:Twice daily at 12-hour intervals
Cost:There is a charge for these datasets. See the dataset web pages for more information.
Comments:Together, ds082.1 and ds083.1 cover the period of record stated. The grids in each dataset are from the same operational model. They are in separate datasets simply because of a change in the grid format. The grids in ds082.1 are in an NCEP binary format and the grids in ds083.1 are in GRIB Edition 1 format. The ds082.1 grids can be converted to GRIB on request.
ds069.5NMC NGM North America Analyses, daily
    Period of Record:1984 October-continuinga
Areal Coverage:North America
Grid Resolution/Type:190.5km at 60°N latitude/Polar-Stereographic
Frequency:Twice daily at 12-hour intervals
Cost:There is a charge for this dataset. See the dataset web page for more information.
Comments:6-hourly forecast grids out to 48 hours are also available twice daily.

acontinuing means that the dataset continues to be updated as new data become available; see the dataset web page for information on the latest available data
